Recover from Injuries with Sports Massage Therapy in Hay on Wye

Are you experiencing trouble with an injury or general discomfort? At Hay Therapies, I offer an array of therapeutic massage treatments, including sports massage, to help you out of pain. Based in Hay on Wye, Hereford, I am a qualified massage therapist who is experienced in assessing problems and providing suitable treatments and therapy for pain points. My services are available to active and not-so-active clients alike, so get in touch today to discuss your needs.
Sports Massage
Focusing on one or two areas of the body, sports massage is a targeted treatment for loosening tight muscles after sport or relieving pain from a recurring problematic area. Whether you have an injury or problems with posture, I’m here to help.
With my sports massage treatments, I aim to help you manage your muscles more effectively and efficiently, so that you can quickly return to activity or training. I am qualified in Sports Massage Level 4, which includes Sports Injury Management, Posture Analysis, Soft Tissue Therapy, and Reflexology.
Generally recognised as the “no pain, no gain” treatment, some sports massage manoeuvres may test your resolve, but the intention is to restore movement and kick-start healing by treating tight, restricted structures and soft tissue.
Benefits of Massage
This type of treatment is suitable for all kinds of clients, whether they are active and exercising or spending long periods holding the same position, such as drivers and office workers. Sports massage has many recognised benefits, providing relief for the following problems:
  • Sports Injuries, Joint Sprains, and Muscular Strains
  • Rotator Cuff Problems, including Frozen Shoulder and Tennis/Golfer Elbow
  • Postural Dysfunction
  • Gait and Joint Immobility
  • Repetitive Strain Injury
  • Muscular Spasm
  • General Muscular Pains and Soft Tissue Injury
Therapeutic Massage
This type of massage offers a milder, more generalised approach, aimed at calming symptoms and stress responses. Therapeutic massage provides relaxation for various types of pain and dysfunction, including:
  • Rotator Cuff and Shoulder Problems, including Frozen Shoulder
  • Neck Pain
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Muscle Pain Related to Posture
  • Sciatic Pain and Piriformis Syndrome
  • Tight Hamstrings and Calf Muscles
Massage Techniques
My massage style focuses on soft tissues within the body, releasing tension, and improving blood flow and circulation. Techniques and approaches vary in nature depending on the outcome you require. These techniques include:
  • Assessment General/Swedish Massage – to palpate and identify the working area.
  • Deep-Tissue Massage – to warm, realign, and stretch soft tissue.
  • Neuro-Muscular Techniques – to work sensitive tissue areas through trigger points.
  • Muscle Energy Techniques – to stretch and manipulate specific muscles.
  • Soft Tissue Release – to stretch and release target muscle groups and superficial tissue.
Relaxation Massage
If you suffer from tight shoulders and neck muscles, you may be suffering from stress. A relaxation massage focuses on these common problem areas, helping you to relax while also reducing pain, stiffness, and tension.
As well as boosting physical, psychological, and emotional wellbeing, a warm and relaxing massage has an array of other benefits, including:
  • Improved Sleep – due to the effects of relaxation on the nervous system.
  • Happier Disposition – due to endorphin release.
  • Reduced Pain – due to release of muscle knots and stiff joints.
Regular sessions are especially beneficial, as each treatment builds on the previous one, meaning that a short course can help you through heightened periods of stress or anxiety, such as exam preparations or work deadlines. I currently offer treatments ranging from 60 minutes to 90 minutes long.
What to Expect
I always begin by carrying out a full consultation to assess your suitability for massage, gathering any relevant information or background to your injury or pain.
Depending on the reason for your visit, I will also carry out a posture analysis to identify any postural or gait imbalances at your initial consultation. I work on postural imbalances brought about through your daily routine, habits, and training that may cause a shortening or tightening of muscles. Following my guidance will offer an improvement in your range of motion and general mobility.
Using the information from your consultation, I use different techniques to ensure effective treatment. This may include a combination of deep tissue massage, energy techniques, stretching, neuromuscular techniques, and soft tissue release so that a better result may be achieved.
Please note that all treatments require some level of undress to shorts or underwear. Only the treatment area will be exposed.
After treatment, we can discuss your goals and objectives and devise a treatment plan on how to move forward in helping you back to fitness. Where appropriate, I will advise you about stretching and warm-up techniques to enable you to manage your own recovery.
